The Story of San Andrés; The church gained significant prominence in 1860 when it was donated to the Franciscan order, who transformed the site into a convent. Over the centuries, it has stood as a testament to the "Chiquitana" influence in urban architecture, blending traditional European styles with local materials and craftsmanship. It is particularly revered by the local community for its tranquil atmosphere, offering a peaceful contrast to the bustling activity of the nearby Plaza 24 de Septiembre. In 2018, the church added a modern chapter to its history with the inauguration of a massive, 12-meter-tall altarpiece carved entirely from cedar, which has become a major focal point for visitors and parishioners alike.
Architectural Highlights & Features:
Tuscan Columns: It is one of the few remaining churches in the region to preserve its original Tuscan columns, which are intricately decorated with Baroque vegetable and floral motifs.
Wooden Bell Tower: Unlike the stone or brick towers of many cathedrals, San Andrés features a tower executed in wood, reflecting the traditional building techniques of the area.
Greek-Inspired Facade: The exterior features a unique veranda with a wood-carved pediment that gives the entrance a look reminiscent of an ancient Greek temple.
Cedar Altarpiece: The interior is dominated by a majestic 12-meter altarpiece, a contemporary masterpiece of wood carving that honors the church's long-standing devotion to Saint Andrew.
