In the Atacama Desert, the Incan princess Ñusta Huillac ruled as the "Tyrant" until she fell in love with a captive explorer. She chose to convert to his faith, but both were killed by her warriors in a hail of arrows. Before dying, she asked for a cross to mark her grave. Years later, a monk found that cross and built a chapel on the spot, beginning the legend of La Tirana, Chile’s most iconic desert sanctuary.
